Mike Sutherland Photography is a collection of images that represent hundreds of hours spent behind a camera lens, understanding and photographing wildlife, in its purest and wildest form. In wilderness areas, that are vast and untouched.
Mike worked as a Game Ranger throughout South Africa, after completing a post graduate degree in Quantity Surveying, (BSc Prop Dev Hons QS). Mike spent 5 years working in the bush as a Field Guide with andBeyond at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve and Phinda Private Game Reserve, then moving to the well known Londolozi Game Reserve, situated in the Sabi Sands. During this time his love for nature, naturally blossomed and grew into a passion and photography followed. Being a self taught photographer, Mike spent many hours learning from other leading photographers in the industry, following their work closely, reading blogs and honing his skills each day in the field. During his few years at Londolozi, Mike spent many hours behind the scenes writing for the Londolozi Blog, contributing written pieces accompanied with photography, for a growing audience.
After an amazing journey in these vast, wild expanses, Mike set his sites on the city lights and moved to Johannesburg, where he now works closely with a Safari company called Safari Architects, who specialize in designing tailor-made luxury Safari's for travellers, families, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts, throughout Southern and East Africa.
From the streets of Durban, as city dwelling young honours student, Mike felt the urge to follow a path out of the ordinary. After university, the decision was made, and it was off to the wilds of Africa.
A gruelling training course, weeks in the bush living off the land, and Mike qualified as a Game Ranger/ Field Guide and joined the &Beyond family.
In the coming years, Mike worked at lodges all around the country, honing his skills in the bush and this is where his love for photography developed.
After moving to Londolozi Game Reserve, Mike focussed on his love for photography and began to write and contribute to the Londolozi Blog.
Each game drive revealed new opportunities and each image was a learning curve. Mike became a photographic guide, and was tasked with not only getting guests great images, but identifying opportunities, the right light, angles and experience.
It was these moments where Mike realised that this would be a passion that would never leave him and he continues to focus on photography as a career and passion.
